Experiential Learning
Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re the chance to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship, service or study abroad.
Internships
Students who think they want to make the leap from a science and math based curriculum at Richmond to an engineering curriculum at one of our partner programs are encouraged to secure an internship in the engineering field so that they can be sure about their decision to transition.

Study Abroad
Study abroad is popular at Richmond, with nearly 70 percent of our students completing an experience abroad. The University has over 70 study abroad programs in more than 25 countries.
With appropriate advance course planning, pre-engineering students can accommodate an experience abroad. They should be cautious, however, because of the large number of sequenced science and math classes that they need to fit into a condensed three-year schedule. Students may decide that summer experiences offer the best of both worlds—an international experience and three full years on campus to complete all the pre-engineering requirements. Other study abroad experiences are particularly geared towards students in the sciences and may allow students to earn appropriate credit while overseas. The key to finding the right program is to begin researching international opportunities early.
